How do I prepare a refrigerator or freezer for self storage?
Unplug and defrost the unit completely at least two days before moving. Drain all water lines and wipe interior surfaces dry with a vinegar solution to eliminate moisture. Always prop appliance doors slightly open during storage to allow air circulation and prevent stale odours from forming inside.
What steps are needed when storing a washing machine or dryer?
Disconnect supply hoses and drain remaining water from the internal pump reservoir of your washing machine. Clean lint traps on dryers and secure drum suspension bolts if provided by the manufacturer. Keep appliances elevated on pallets and leave door hatches unlatched to ensure continuous interior ventilation.

Refrigerators and Chest Freezers
Defrost coils completely to avoid water pooling inside your unit. Tape a block of wood or folded cardboard between the door frame and rubber gasket to keep the door propped open half an inch while stored.
Washing Machines and Clothes Dryers
Store washer hoses inside the machine drum wrapped in towels. Wipe down dryer lint traps and outer cabinets. Place machines on wooden pallets to maintain air clearance from the floor.
Microwaves and Small Kitchen Appliances
Remove glass turntable plates and pack them separately in bubble wrap. Wind electrical cords neatly and secure them to the back of each appliance with painter tape.
